All AVC systems involve electronic equipment, and all electronics may fail without warning. The consequential loss of opportunity by systems that are thus handicapped by failure is unthinkable in businesses that by their very nature require zero downtime.

Proper maintenance is therefore mandated, both preventive and remedial.

• Preventive maintenance is conducted to keep equipment working and/or extend the life of the equipment.
• Corrective/ remedial maintenance, sometimes called "repair", is conducted to get equipment working again.
